They are also referred to as Stinky Benjamin's or as Muskoka locals call them, Stinky Jacks. The smell is an attractant for the Carrion Fly who will them pollinate them. I was fortunate to find one pointing straight out instead of it's usual downward direction, and the rain drop was a wonderful bonus.
